Why Halalyzer works this way

Three claims, zero marketing fluff. Each one below is present-tense true of the shipped app and is enforced by an automated check in our build pipeline — a release that breaks any of them cannot ship. This page shows the receipts, including how the rest of the category handles the same three things.

1. Offline — the verdict data ships inside the app

The ruling data — E-code rulings, ingredient dictionary, certifier registry, madhhab profiles — is bundled into the app binary. Scan in a basement supermarket, in airplane mode, in a village with no signal: the verdict works fully offline. Network is an enhancement (fresher product metadata), never a requirement.

Enforced by: the bundled-pack integrity test (every shipped data pack must inflate and match its source mirror) and the offline/cached verdict-parity test (an offline verdict must equal the online one for the same input) — both block the build when red.

2. No AI — the verdict is deterministic, zero-LLM

There is zero AI in the verdict path (architecture decision ADR-0011). The verdict is a rules lookup against cited data, so the same input always produces the same verdict — reproducible, explainable, and traceable to a named basis. No model ever improvises a ruling.

Enforced by: a continuous-integration check that scans the verdict engine for any AI/LLM import and hard-fails the build if one ever appears. This is a structural guarantee, not a policy promise.

3. Free forever — the core verdict is never metered

Scan a barcode, get the halal verdict: no per-scan limit, no trial period, no ads on the verdict, no “upgrade to keep scanning.” The offline data packs are never behind Pro either. When a scanner meters scans, that is usually because each scan carries a per-use cost — usage-billed AI inference being the most common. A deterministic lookup costs the same near-zero on scan #1 and scan #100,000, so there is no structural reason to ever meter the verdict.

Enforced by: an automated no-paywall check on the verdict path plus an entitlements truth test that pins the free-forever feature set — both block the build when red.

How the rest of the category handles the same three things

Factual, sourced, and current as of the access dates shown. We name no competitor inside the app — these comparisons live only here, where we can cite them.

Offline mode and search are a paid tier elsewhere

Yuka (a nutrition scanner, not a halal scanner) sells its offline mode and its search-without-scanning as a Premium membership at 15 €/year. Its own pages describe the paid version as including “an offline mode which allows you to scan and access a product's grade even when not connected to a network” and a search bar to “access a product's grade without having to scan it.” Halalyzer ships both — offline verdicts and search without scanning — free.

Several halal scanners generate verdicts with a cloud AI model

A leading competitor describes itself as “an AI-first app that uses Google's Gemini model to read ingredient lists, product photos, or barcodes on demand.” That design needs a network call per scan, and its output can vary. Halalyzer's verdict path is deterministic with zero LLM calls — enforced by the build check described above.

What opaque verdicts cost: a documented pork-gelatin miss

A public App Store review of a competing halal scanner documents the app showing a product whose label read “gelatin (pork)” as halal (“I was so disgusted when the app told me that a product with pork gelatin was halal” — user review, Feb 2023; the developer replied that algorithm errors are corrected as found). We cite this not to mock a competitor but because it is the failure mode our architecture exists to prevent: in Halalyzer, pork gelatin is a named, deterministic trigger — the same label text produces the same Haram verdict every time, with the basis shown.

Uzbek, Russian and Turkish ingredient terms — offline and free

Of the ten scanner apps in our June 2026 competitive teardown, none of the others combines a free, offline verdict with Uzbek, Russian and Turkish ingredient-term coverage. Halalyzer ships all three languages in its bundled ingredient dictionary (alongside 25+ others), so a label in Tashkent, Kazan or Istanbul resolves without a network connection.
